Through this semester of study cosmopolitanism, I learned about the concept of cosmopolitanism, the impact of cosmopolitan perspective on education, and how can I engage my students by using the PBI theory to develop their cosmopolitan perspective.
Kwame Anthony Appiah once mentioned in his books that people should reconsider the moral standards from a cosmopolitan perspective, and conducted the further harmonization of human beings by resisting nationalism. And he pointed that two aspects of cosmopolitanism: “One is the idea that we have obligations to others, obligations that stretch beyond those to whom we are related by the ties of kith and kind, or even the more formal ties of a shared citizenship” (Ikenberry, & Appiah, 2006), and “the other is that we take seriously the value not just of human life but of particular human lives, which means taking an interest in the practices and beliefs that lend them significance” (Ikenberry, & Appiah, 2006).Appiah used to note the cosmopolite idea of cosmopolitanism as well as the differences among varied cultures. Simon Caney who is a Professor in Political Theory at the University of Oxford has emphasizes that cosmopolitanism can be divided into three types: juridical cosmopolitanism, ethic cosmopolitanism, and politics cosmopolitanism (p388). In this notion, judicial cosmopolitanism refers to cosmopolitanism about justice and ethical cosmopolitanism is similar with culture cosmopolitanism. In conclusion, cosmopolitanism means to look at the world from various perspectives, cosmopolitanism has nothing to do with negating one's own country or nation, but encourages people to go beyond the limitation of their recognition and look at problems, themselves, other societies and people, as well as the world from on a higher level. The video below shows that thought leader Kwame Anthony Appiah on cosmopolitanism
